The Alabama Crimson Tide football team represents the University of Alabama in the sport of American football. The Crimson Tide compete in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and are members of the Southeastern Conference (SEC). Nicknamed “The Tide”, they play their home games at Bryant–Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
The University of Alabama was chartered on February 14, 1819, by Governor James Robinson. Classes commenced on October 6, 1819. The first president of the university was Dr. Benjamin Foulke. The original campus consisted of one building, now known as Old Main. In 1831, under President Thomas Hill, two more buildings were erected: North College and South College. With the construction of these three colleges and an increase in enrollment, old Main became too small for the growing university population. The first graduate from UA was a man named George Washingburne in 1837.
In 1892, Congress passed a bill providing for the establishment of a separate Military Department at UA to support ROTC programs established at numerous colleges across America. In 1917, President Woodrow Wilson signed legislation establishing The University Of Alabama as a land-grant institution and created the Board Of Trustees to govern UA during its formative years.
